Open Hearts is for all trans, non-binary and gender diverse individuals. As well as those looking to affirm, to explore, or are questioning a trans or gender-diverse identity. Open Hearts focuses on building community and connections.
As distinct from some of the other groups, this is an open format group that is casual and informal in nature. It is about creating space for individuals to share and just be themselves.
This event will be held in the room near the entrance of the building. Look for the Skipping Stone sign!

UPCOMING EXHIBITION/
Otipemisiwak Fantasy - Riel Starr
OPENING RECEPTION:
October 23rd, 2026
7PM - 9PM
ARTIST'S TOUR:
6:30PM
The New Gallery
208 Centre St S, Calgary
Otipemisiwak Fantasy is an exploration of contemporary Métis culture through an Indigiqueer and twospirited perspective. It is a love letter to my culture, a way of thanking my relatives who worked so hard to maintain our connection to our culture and land, and allowed me to dream and imagine Indigiqueer futures, Métis spirituality, and the role of the twospirited Otipemisiw. Through historic and contemporary ways of making, Otipemisiwak Fantasy takes the form of a boudoir setting, a sort of dressing room for the artistic personas Otipemisiwak Fantasy Husband and Wife, Indigiqueer representations of Métis gender roles.
The exhibition asks the questions that linger on the lips of the public as they perceive and interact with Indiqueerness and the Michif culture as it exists in history and a contemporary context, revealing the discomfort in invasive conversations regarding native, trans bodies. In implicating the viewers, members of the general public who will pass by and possibly enter The New Gallery and engage with the work in their daily lives. I invite the public to sit with the discomfort of both the unapologetic displays of queerness and the heavy history of my people, reminding the audience that we did not end in 1885, we continue to own ourselves.

Riel Starr descends maternally from Métis families from the historic Red River Settlement and Batoche, notably their Berthelet ancestors were community leaders in Pointe à Grouette and their Caron ancestors fought in the Northwest Resistance of 1885. They were born in Amiskwaciywâskahikan, Edmonton, Treaty 6 territory and have been residing in Mohkinstsis, Calgary, Alberta since 2020. They introduce themselves in this way, the traditional way of the Métis to contextualise their knowledge and experiences and situate themselves on this land.

Our October book is "I Want to Be a Wall" by Honami Shirono! This "slice of life" manga graphic novel is about the unique relationship between an asexual woman & a gay man and the world they navigate together. The manga is written in 3 parts; this meeting will focus on part 1, but we may discuss the other parts if people decide to read them too. Most of it is available to read for free online!
Please RSVP here: https://www.abacesandaros.ca/event-details-registration/book-club-25
We will email you the online meeting link an hour before Book Club starts, so that it's at the top of your inbox.
Everyone is welcome to join us, whether you’re a-spec yourself, or interested in reading books with a-spec characters/themes. This is a "no obligations Book Club" and everyone is welcome to attend, whether you read the book or not (just be aware you might hear some spoilers). We usually hold meetings every month, depending on the book chosen and its availability at libraries across Alberta. Feel free to bring suggestions for what we should read next!
Let us know if you have any questions (email: info@abacesandaros.ca).
Wondering what else our Book Club has read? Check out this list of past books!
